Futons – Comfort And Versatility All In One

A good night’s sleep can really leave you feeling rejuvenated and ready to face the day.  On the other hand, a lumpy, springy mattress can make waking up an agonizing experience.

Many people put up with a worn out mattress, however, because they have no other choice.  Traditional bedroom sets are costly, and they take up a lot of space.  What if one only has a studio apartment?

There is a solution that makes a whole lot of sense.  It’s called a futon.  Now, I know what you’re thinking.  A futon is something that you’d find in a college dorm room.  That’s what most people think.  And yes, they are popular with college students.

However, futons are quickly becoming very popular with the masses.  That’s because they’ve changed.  The craftsmanship of futon beds has greatly improved in the last few years, and they cost about half as much as a traditional mattress.

In this day and age there’s three things that people really want.  That’s comfort, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.  I call it the “three C’s”.  Maybe that’s why futons have become so popular, or maybe it’s because they just make sense.

Futons don’t take up a lot of space. They also convert from a couch to a bed very easily.  Remember those old sofa beds?  You needed at least three people to pull them out and get them ready to sleep on!

Most futons are light and so they can easily be moved.  In fact, many people buy them because they are easily navigated through tight doorways and around sharp corners.  This is perfect for houses with smaller rooms.

Speaking of smaller rooms; how many of you have a huge living room and tiny bedrooms?  I’m not sure who designs houses like that, but thank goodness for futons when it comes to space constraints!  They’re perfect for a child’s room.  You can fold the futon up in the morning and you’re child will still have room to play, regardless of room size.

Futons are also popular because they’re versatile.  Futon covers come in many different colors and designs, and are easily interchangeable.  Putting up new wallpaper but don’t have the money for new furniture?  No problem!  A new matching futon cover is only $50!

If you’re like me and you have a large family, you’re futon will come in handy.  Especially if you don’t have a guest room.  I have a futon in my study that my relatives just love to sleep on when they visit.  They constantly remark on how comfortable it is.  Sometimes I think if I didn’t have it they’d never come and visit!

That’s another myth about futons.  Many people remember the ones that had the thin foam cushions with steel bars underneath.  Not so with futons today.  Many futon mattresses are made with memory foam, and even have pillow tops.  The frame is just as sturdy as any bed.

All in all, a futon serves many uses.  It’s one of the most versatile pieces of furniture you can have in your house.  Next time you’re out shopping for a bed, maybe you should come home with a futon instead!

How to Keep Your Futon Mattress From Sliding Down the Full Futon Frame!

Posted at Saturday, 01 May 2010 in full futon mattress,, full futon,, futon cover,, futon mattress,

Everyone who owns a futon can relate to all of these situations. You’re always pulling your mattress up so it sits up straight on the frame! Every time you flip and turn your mattress your pretty sure it has a mind of it’s own because it always wants to jump off the futon frame! Your mattress slides forward off the frame till it’s halfway on the floor! You know – your sitting on your futon watching some TV and before you realize it you have slid half way down the futon frame! How many of these have happened to you?

The only question anyone who owns a futon has ever asked is “how do I keep my mattress from slipping off my futon frame?” Let’s take a look at a few reasons why this might happen and then what can be done about it.

You just bought a new mattress and they tend to be stiff till they break in or you just flipped and turned your mattress and when you do that the mattress has a tendency to want to pop off the futon frame. Another reason could be that the soft cloth material of your futon mattress cover and the futon frame just makes a nice slippery combination. One person put it best when she said, “my kid loves it because he thinks it’s a ride”.

There are a few products on the market that claim to combat this problem and one that claims to be the solution – lets take a look at them.

The first product is called gripper strips, the bottom side of the strip has an adhesive that you stick onto the front edge of your futon frame seat and as well as the top edge of the back deck of your futon frame. The top side of the strip is made with a foam material, when it comes in contact with your futon mattress cover material it creates a resistance and is suppose to help hold your futon mattress in place.

Product number two is a rug pad, you can find them at furniture store, department store, or you could check your local futon store. You just lay the rug pad on the futon frame seat and set your mattress on top of the rug stopper material and hope it stops it from sliding.

Last but not least we have the futon mattress strap. The futon mattress strap eliminates the need to ever pull your mattress up off the floor again! The Futon Mattress Strap is made of rugged 1 inch wide nylon webbing along with durable plastic buckles. You can install the strap across the full futon mattress in about 10 minutes and your mattress is secured. The futon mattress strap tucks neatly in the crease of your mattress, you never see it!

Futon furniture VS conventional furniture

Those of us who own a futon know the value they bring to our homes. There are however, many people who have never considered a futon and are not sure why they should invest in one. Let’s take a look at what futons offer vs. conventional furniture.

Many homes have short or narrow halls and doorways that are not wide enough to fit most conventional furniture. It could be you want to use the furniture in the basement and getting conventional furniture down there is difficult with narrow stairways and sharp turns. These problems are easy to overcome when you buy futon furniture. Futon frames and mattresses are packaged separately, futon frames come in flat boxes and the mattresses are flexible, making them easier to get to their new location in your home.

Futons are great if you move often, say to college and back home again then to college and back home again, and so on and so on. If this is you, then a futon is the perfect furniture for you to own. Unlike heavy, bulky conventional couch frames or lounge chairs, when a futon is broken down into its smaller components, futons are light weight and easy to transport from place to place.

Futons are great when it comes to seeing what you’re paying for. You see the futon mattress, you take the futon mattress off the frame and you see how the futon frame is constructed. You can get a real good up close look at every part of the futon frame, the nuts, bolts and brackets as well as what type of wood your futon frame is made of. The best wood would be a harder wood like oak, maple, excreta. When the wood is more costly the craftsmanship is usually better. You can’t see into conventional furniture like that.

Another really great thing about futons is the fact that you can change the mattress cover to keep up with current styles or to simply match your mood. The cost of a futon mattress cover depends on what fabric you choose. Price is determined by the quality of the fabric and construction, futon mattress covers start at a plain cotton sheet type cover at around $40.00 to upholstery fabrics which are more durable, last longer and can cost up to about $250.00. You can find many themed prints from animals, floral, nautical, sports and many more. Sure, you can reupholster a sofa and get to choose the fabric but the cost would be about as much as purchasing a new sofa.

If you take the time to care for your futon mattress it will last for many years. Keep your futon mattress covered to protect from stains, dust and dirt. It is also recommended by futon mattresses manufacturers that you flip and turn you futon mattress often, this will help your mattress wear evenly and extend the life of your futon mattress. A futon mattress will have a tendency to want to jump off the frame when they are flipped, so to combat this problem we recommend the Futon Mattress Strap.
